5 Key Marketing Principles You Can Learn from this Crazy YouTube Kid

5 Key Marketing Principles You Can Learn from this Crazy YouTube Kid

A Crazy YouTube kid who gets 2,639,565 views on his YouTube video! And over 7,000 comments!

In this post you’re going to…

Discover how you can swipe and deploy this wacky kid’s undercover tactics to Create a HUGE Army of Crazy, Non-Stop Chattering Evangelists for your business and to Sky Rocket Your Sales forever!

But first, you’ve got to watch this video. Yes, it’s completely pointless and pretty crazy. But, I’ll explain all the marketing that’s actually going behind all of this guy’s videos below.

So let me tell you a little story about this video…

The other day, my brother walked into my room and showed me this kid he’s been following on YouTube for some time. He was acting like a crazy evangelist, saying how funny this kid is and how I HAVE to watch this video.

Of course, being in the middle of my work day, I try to shrug him off by telling him,“I’m working,  Jon, show it to me later.” But noooo, he says, “come on man, you have to see it!” So, after his acting like a crazy, non-stop evangelist for 5 minutes or so, I finally gave in and watched this video this “oh so funny kid” did, so that my brother would stop bugging me and leave me alone to work.

He shows it to me, and quite frankly, it’s probably one of the craziest, dumbest, and most random, not to mention, most pointless videos I’ve ever seen in my life. But! Then I slightly glanced over at its YouTube views and noticed it had 2,639,565 views!  And not just that, it also had over 7,000 comments!

No disrespect to the funny guy who made this video, but…

Can you believe such a pointless video could not only get so many comments for social proof, but also get so much traffic?!

I scrolled down the page, looking at the views of his other videos and it turns out they all average between 700,000 and 4 million views each!

And each video gets tons of comments. I mean like TONS of comments!  (Anywhere from 2,000 to 12,000 comments per video.)

I was thinking to myself, ”…WHAT THE H*LL!”

Here I am, a guy probably much like you, who takes marketing as a serious matter in his business, studying marketing tactics taught  by the best of the best, all the time, and has never had a video with millions of views and tens of thousands of comments on it!

But this wild and slightly eccentric kid named Julian Smith seems to be kickin’ ass on his marketing and averages those numbers for each video he does!

I thought, “what the hell am I doing wrong!?”

So then, I began to look closely at his videos from a marketing standpoint and realized some key marketing principles he was using that can’t help but get him awesome results.

And if you use them in your business and marketing, you’re going to get GREAT results too.

Don’t  worry, we all have room to improve and we’re all guilty of not always consistently implementing everything we know we should be implementing.

But, if we all applied these following principles I’m about to share with you as much as we should, we would all be getting better results. So let’s all make sure we’re consistently applying these principles this kid, Julian Smith uses to get tons of traffic, to create a huge cult of evangelists, and to drive massive behavior in his followers.

Without further ado, let’s get down to the juicy stuff!

After analyzing many of this funny kid’s videos, here are the 5 key marketing principles I found he was commonly applying in all of them to get the amazing results on the Internet…

1 st Key Marketing Principle: Be Unique

You cannot watch this video and tell me he is not one of the most unusual individuals you’ve ever seen.  Haha. I’m serious, this guy is really a character. He is indeed unique. But, that’s exactly what we need to be now-a-days, unique characters. And we need to express ourselves and be unique in everything that we do.

In business, we find so many businesses copying the same things their competition is doing and using the same old marketing strategies that everyone else in their market has been using for ages.  To the consumer, it all becomes “the usual,” and you and your business become invisible.

In a world of too many options and too little time, our obvious choice is to just ignore the ordinary stuff and go for whatever catches our attention.

People and many businesses like to follow the crowd and do what everyone else is doing because they think it’s safe. Now, doing what everyone believes to be “safe” is risky and like the many times bestselling author, Seth Godin once said, “the only way to be safe is to be on the fringes, be remarkable.”

2 nd Key Marketing Principle: Be Entertaining

In our highly dynamic society and as our attention spans decrease at speeds never before seen in the course of history, to grab the attention of our prospects we need to be unique. But to hold it, we need to be entertaining.

By now, most of us and most of the generations that make up the planet have grown up with TVs and radios as sources of information and for the younger generations, you can add the Internet to that. But, we’ve primarily grown up using these forms of media as sources of entertainment.

The only way we’re able to pay attention to the information we’re getting from them long enough is because it’s presented to us in an entertaining way.

So entertaining, that some people can happily watch TV, listen to the radio, and surf the Internet all day long!

And with the way movies, highly dynamic websites, radio and TV are today, we’re so used to consuming information in such a quick and entertaining way, that if we don’t find how we’re getting our information entertaining or amusing , we almost instantly jump off to the next thing that grabs our attention.

This wild kid or I should say, very smart kid, disguises his message or the information he wants to get across to his viewers in these videos many people seem to find highly entertaining.

So is your marketing boring?

See how you can get your point across and entertain your prospects at the same time.

Oh, and I didn’t mention how highly viral having entertaining marketing tactics can be, whether it be through word of mouth or through social media and the web.

Moving on…

3 rd Key Marketing Principle: Be Consistent

To build a loyal following who eagerly look forward to your next point of contact, product, event, follow up or whatever it may be, you need to be consistent with your marketing and everything you do.

You need to consistently be in contact with them.

You need to consistently be yourself, be consistent with what you’re known for, what your values, ideas and vision are, in everything that you do.

A great example of a highly successful company that is on top of its game, the one that had the most successful product launch ever, the one that has created diehard evangelists, and the one that has built a large and highly loyal community around its products is Apple.

The reason that it’s been able to do this is because Apple represents certain ideas like innovation and being the first on the market with new technology, that directly connect with the type of prospect they want, who shares those same ideas. And Apple shows its consistency in those ideas with every product that they come out with.

That’s why no matter what they come out with, whether it be a computer, laptop, ipod, iphone, or even and Ipad, the loyal followers who share those same ideas will buy it and wait many hours or even days to get whatever it is, first.

Next, you need to be consistent in the way you reach your prospects and your ever-growing loyal following, whether it be through video, podcasts, webinars, tele-seminars, live seminars, by phone, postcards, articles, email, TV, radio, etc. You get the point.

The crazy YouTube kid has done this by consistently creating and publishing one his out of the ordinary, wild videos every week and notifying his fans through YouTube the same way he always does whenever he releases a new video.

In return, he builds a huge following who view his videos millions of times, leave thousands of comments, view his website hundreds of times a day, not to mention, over 80,000 of them have followed him on Facebook.

So, Apple and this YouTube kid prove consistency is key to building a loyal following for you or your business and to be successful in whatever it is you do.

4 th Key Marketing Principle: Drive Action

In all of this kid’s videos, he drives his viewers to take a certain action at the end. Sometimes it’s to go check out his website. Other times, it’s to subscribe to his YouTube channel or to click the link he has below to an offer, podcast, etc.

So, he creates all these highly entertaining videos to drive traffic to wherever he wants it to go and of course for fun .

But by driving these people to subscribe to his channel, to add him on Facebook, to subscribe to his website, and more, he’s building multiple lists and networks where he can reach out to them and wield traffic at will.

These huge networks of people become highly valuable assets and the person they follow and who can direct them wherever he or she wants, becomes highly valuable as well.  They are known as community leaders.

5 th Key Marketing Principle: Have A Memorable Slogan Or Something You’re Known For

At the end of most of Julian Smith’s videos, he says “I did this for you!” and that becomes quite catchy after watching a few of his videos. If you were to say,” I did this for you!” in a funny tone, to anybody who’s previously watched Julian’s videos, they would know exactly who you’re talking about.

That’s his memorable slogan or tagline.

A tagline, strapline, slogan… whatever you choose to call it, is the key phrase that identifies your business by capturing the essence of three elements:

  • Your Mission
  • Your Promise
  • Your Brand

I’m not sure how well the YouTube kid’s slogan “I did this for you!” captures all these elements. But, it’s definitely catchy!  Especially after hearing him yell it at some guy who wouldn’t drink his hot Kool-Aid.

Anyways, coming up with a great tagline is a struggle for many people.

To capture a reader’s eye at a glance, you need to combine all three elements of mission, promise and brand to create a great tagline that really works.

In the copywriting world, they say, “be clear, not clever.”

Online, when someone lands on your website, in a fraction of a second, they decide whether to leave or to stay.

So you need to make it clear to them quickly what your website and business are about.

You also need to incorporate benefits into it. These will be the reasons for them to stay on your site.

People always want something. By adding benefits to a tagline, you’re telling people what’s in it for them and what they get from you.

Finally, make your tagline reflect your business image. Differentiate yourself from the competition. Your business has a personality, so show it. Give people a little taste of your business’ brand in your tagline.

So to conclude things, after dealing with the initial shock that these videos averaged over a million views each and after looking beyond just the humor of the videos, I discovered some key marketing principles in them that can easily be applied to any business or person promoting themselves. These principles are being unique, being entertaining, being consistent, driving action, and having a memorable slogan.

The eccentric YouTube kid, Julian Smith, has a great ability to get tons of viewers to his videos, drive massive behavior through them, and create a huge following. So not only is he a funny dude, but a smart marketer as well.
